Mr. Broadweed, the local schoolmaster in County Barley, makes a renewed effort to convince Steggan to allow Sheila to come to his school. He tells Steggan that he will not have to pay for any books or such, but that Sheila must attend regularly. After a long argument with Sheila, she reluctantly agrees to attend, but only does so for a few days, unable to bear the taunts of the other children who make her feel ignorant and scorn her for her manners and behavior. She does not return, and Steggan is more than happy for her to work his farm and to bring meat to his table through her fishing and hunting.
