For many years, the Elifaen struggle, learning to live as the lowly creatures of the earth, without wings to lift them into the air. Many do not survive. Although they do not sicken, nor do they grow old, they now know weariness, hunger and pain, and death by violence or accident. For the first time, Elifaen hunt and eat flesh. During this period, some even turn to eating their own kind. Many take their own lives while others waste away, idle and filled with melancholia, turning into miserable wraiths until, after uncounted seasons, they turn to dust.
